January 2012: New Song – Stone Hooker

I went in the studio recently and recorded a tune I wrote about a couple who moved up from the states for the husband to try his hand at “Stone Hooking” on the Credit River in Port Credit, ON.  I got the idea from a plaque about this trade that was popular around 1900 for finding nice smooth pieces of rock on the bottom of the river for house building.

What’s Happening

Vince is currently earning his under-graduate combined degree from Humber College and York University with plans to obtain a Master’s Degree in Ethnomusicology. He remains busy gigging and recently launched his own band, Los Variants which is a 12 piece World Music group specifically put together for the festival market. He also is a playing soft seat theatres with multi award winning duo Chris Whitely and Diana Braithwaite (Vinyl Café) and playing regularly with the 2011 JUNO nominated Johnny Max Big Band. This band just completed a two week 6 country European tour and Vince also recorded with Britain’s Storm Gordon while overseas.

What’s Coming Up

This summer will prove to be busy! Vince is working on his 1st solo CD. It will feature 8 originals and one cover song with a variety of styles such as jazz, Latin, funk, blues and he has gathered some of Canada’s best singers and instrumentalists to help him realize this CD. Later in the summer Vince will be doing a 2 week teaching position at Lakefield Music Camp, led by Michael Occhipinti and festival dates with Los Variants as leader and as a sideman with Paul Reddick, Johnny Max, Jerome Godboo and Chris Whitely and Diana Braithwaite. Writing original music with some of Canada’s top performers and writers will be a priority for Vince in the coming months.
